Ocean Vision AI is an NSF-funded effort to address the extraordinary challenge of scaling up our capacity to analyze underwater visual data. We seek to develop platforms that enable effective collaboration between human operators and artificial intelligence through application of principles in human-computer interaction and game design research.
The Ocean Vision AI Platform is a tool designed to dramatically accelerate the analysis of ocean video to localize and classify the organisms found within video frames. While the end-goal will be for the tool to do this automatically, the interim steps will involve a product that allows for training and correction of algorithms from users of various experience levels.
The Product Manager serves as a key team member within the project and will be responsible for requirements gathering and prioritization of features of the Ocean Vision AI platform. The Product Manager will collaborate with key team members and stakeholders to support and help create a compelling product strategy and roadmap and help drive product features from concept to launch.
The Product Manager has responsibility for working with design, engineering, and stakeholders to convert the product vision and strategy into a well-managed product roadmap with an iterative release cycle with the end users in mind. The Product Manager will participate actively in all phases of the process along with cross-functional teams. The product manager will report to the Director of Strategy and Communications.
Build and actively manage a product log of features and capabilities that are developed and prioritized in close collaboration with the business and development teams.
Facilitate resolution of risks, issues and changes between key stakeholders.
Champion the product vision and roadmap for with key stakeholders and engineering teams.
Identify opportunities and provide input on product vision, strategy, roadmap, and features, including external benchmarking and keeping a pulse on user preferences and feedback from user interviews.
Deep engagement and consultation with various business teams to understand current and future needs for product enhancements.
Own and oversee the resolution of production issues.
Coordinate with project teams and across the wider OVAI Products team and other dependent teams to ensure timelines and requirements are aligned.
Establish the product’s goals and review success metrics to achieve success, create optimization recommendations and develop appropriate tracking and reporting to measure performance post – launch to support future grant applications and fundraising.
Maintain high levels of consistency and quality across all experiences.
5+ years of experience in Product Management and/or Product Development.
Highly organized with strong project management skills.
Passion for creating best-in-class products and experiences that are user-centric.
Technical fluency – an ability to clearly describe tradeoffs with users and engineers about certain decisions & good balance with business acumen with a proven track record of driving digital innovation and business metrics with a user-first mindset.
Working knowledge of artificial intelligence or machine learning processes is not required but would be beneficial.
Enjoys dealing with fast pace, changing needs, and limited resources.
The ability to set a high bar for your team and empower them to achieve great results.
A “driver” personality – constantly pushing toward clarity and delivery while balancing the need for great collaboration.
Experience with agile software methodologies or familiarity working in an iterative product development format.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage, influence, and inspire partners and stakeholders to drive collaboration and alignment.

About Ocean Vision AI (OVAI)
Ocean Vision AI is an NSF-funded effort to address the extraordinary challenge of scaling up our capacity to analyze underwater visual data. We seek to develop platforms that enable effective collaboration between human operators and artificial intelligence through application of principles in human-computer interaction and game design research. It is a partnership between the following organizations: MBARI, Central and Northern California Ocean Observing System, Ocean Discovery League, CVision AI, and the University of California Santa Cruz.
About Ocean Discovery League
The Ocean Discovery League aims to remove barriers to equity in deep-sea exploration by developing low-cost deep-sea technologies, creating AI-driven data analysis tools, and building capacity with historically excluded communities. With a growing global population and increasing anthropogenic pressures on earth, the time for innovative initiatives to explore, understand, and share the full depths of the oceans is now. We need to invest in new technologies, research methods, and social systems to transform what it means to explore and discover in the 21st century. By creating a suite of low-cost, distributed tools and supporting a community of explorers around the globe, we will make significantly more progress in understanding our planet than ever before.
