Community Program Coordinator

We are seeking a motivated and organized Community Program Coordinator to lead the coordination and delivery of Accessing the Deep (ATD), Ocean Discovery League's flagship virtual training and mentoring program, and to support a growing portfolio of community-facing initiatives that advance ODL's mission to accelerate deep ocean exploration by broadening the community of those who explore and understand the deep sea. This role sits at the intersection of marine science, education program management, relationship building, and science communication.

Key Responsibilities

Accessing the Deep


  • Co-develop the timeline, strategy, and deliverables for Accessing the Deep in collaboration with the ODL team and partners. This includes coordinating all aspects of the program and working closely with the ODL team and our global network of partners.

  • Coordinate participant recruitment and provide ongoing communication and support to participants throughout the program.

  • Coordinate the review of applications, contribute to curriculum development, and identify and schedule guest speakers.

  • Liaise with students, mentors, and guest speakers to ensure a cohesive and enriching program experience.

  • Coordinate program logistics and maintain organized tracking of deliverables and timelines.

  • Serve as teaching assistant for the program by co-creating and reviewing assignments.

  • Cultivate relationships across ODL program applicants, participants, alumni, speakers, and mentors to spark new connections and opportunities for deep ocean exploration worldwide. 

  • Depending on knowledge and experience, the Community Program Coordinator may serve as an instructor for the program, leading one or more sessions on deep-sea topics such as science, technology, policy, or planning. Expertise in any of these areas is a plus.


Additional Program Support


  • Serve as an advocate in the ocean community for accessible ocean exploration systems and experiences.

  • Assist in coordinating multiplatform online communities for multiple programs.

  • Present key ODL activities, its mission, and goals to collaborators and partners, media outlets, and ocean groups virtually or in person, as needed.

  • Gather content from ODL program participants and the broader ocean community in the form of blog posts, photos, video, and other media to support communication and outreach efforts.

  • Contribute to capacity building and community development programming and logistics for other ODL projects as needed.

  • Support the VP of Strategy & Communications with social media engagement and outreach communications as needed and time allows.

  • Other duties as mutually agreed upon with the team.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a marine science field, plus two years of directly-related experience in project management, program management, or other community engagement experience. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted, as long as it relates to the essential duties and responsibilities. Preference will be given to candidates with education program management and informal education experience.

  • Highly organized with strong project management skills.

  • A proactive contributor who is constantly pushing toward clarity and delivery while balancing the need for great collaboration.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively and build authentic relationships with people from diverse racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and gender backgrounds.

  • Strong analytical writing skills and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to develop and conduct presentations and training sessions.

  • Desire to educate the community about the unique issues facing ocean exploration. 

  • A genuine commitment to equity and inclusion and an enthusiastic and positive attitude about changing systems and community perspectives.

  • Ability to think and plan strategically, while acting tactically.

  • Proficiency in Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive) is required. 

  • Knowledge of or familiarity with Canva, MailChimp, , basic video editing, and graphic design is a plus.

  • Familiarity and willingness to utilize social media, especially Instagram, Instagram Stories, YouTube, Facebook, and Bluesky, Threads.

  • A passion for the deep ocean is encouraged!

Compensation:

$30-40/hour, based on experience

About Ocean Discovery League

Founded by deep-sea explorer Dr. Katy Croff Bell, Ocean Discovery League's mission is to accelerate deep-ocean exploration by developing accessible systems to broaden the community of those who explore and understand the deep sea. ODL is developing a strategic approach to expand the area of the seafloor that is explored, mapped, and characterized while reducing expenses by creating lower-cost, easier-to-use tools and technology. These actions, along with a more targeted approach to selecting exploration locations, will expand deep ocean exploration to a broader community of explorers.
