Accessing the Deep: Deep Ocean
Training & Mentoring Program

Ocean Discovery League’s (ODL) flagship capacity-building and mentorship program, Accessing the Deep (ATD), is transforming how early-career individuals gain meaningful entry into deep-sea exploration. In 2026, ATD will enter its third year, continuing to counter the inefficient and expensive deep-ocean research practices that have long limited our ability to explore at scale.

This global gap in access has led to biased research priorities, restricted scientific discovery, slowed development of sustainable ocean-based economies, and kept many communities from fully recognizing the deep ocean’s value. ATD is designed to broaden participation and ensure that a wider diversity of voices helps shape the future of deep-sea exploration.

Participants receive comprehensive online training in technical and oceanographic knowledge from leading international deep-sea science experts, with a focus on low-cost, accessible approaches for exploring waters deeper than 200 m. The program also supports participants in crafting research proposals that integrate affordable tools and locally relevant exploration strategies.

After completing the training, participants are paired with deep-sea or regional mentors who guide them in developing tailored research proposals, ensuring they are prepared to make substantial, place-based contributions to the field.

The deep sea covers two-thirds of our planet, yet more than 99% remains unexplored. ATD is building the community that will help change that, together.

"My perspective now includes feasible ideas of deep-sea research, and a better grasp of...data management, expedition planning, and policy. I feel more confident in my deep-sea knowledge and familiar with the deep-sea community."

— Cara Lin, 2025 ATD Student, Guam
