Michelle Guraieb

Community Program Coordinator

Michelle Guraieb is a biological oceanographer from Mexico with a passion for deep-sea ecosystems and science communication. Her research has focused on the ecology and biodiversity of mineral-rich hardgrounds, including ferromanganese crusts and phosphorite rocks. She holds a degree in Marine Science and Geography from the University of Sydney and a master’s in Biological Oceanography from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, where she currently volunteers in a deep-sea research lab, contributing to various projects.

Michelle has participated in deep-sea expeditions off the coast of Southern California, exploring chemosynthetic ecosystems such as methane seeps. Beyond research, she works at the intersection between science and policy by co-leading the Climate Change Working Group of the Deep-Ocean Stewardship Initiative (DOSI) and as the host and co-producer of Think Deep! Decoding Deep-Ocean Science and Policy, DOSI’s new podcast.

She will be starting her Ph.D. at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in the fall of 2026, where she will study deep-sea coral communities on Pacific seamounts. Driven by a commitment to ocean conservation, Michelle aims to raise awareness about the critical role the deep ocean plays in our planet’s health and our daily lives.
